Pliohippus edensis was named by Frick (1921).

It was recombined as Pliohippus (Pliohippus) edensis by Stirton (1940); it was synonymized subjectively with Dinohippus leidyanus by Azzaroli (1988) and Kelly (1998); it was recombined as Dinohippus edensis by Kelly and Lander (1988) and MacFadden (1998).
