Dinohippus leidyanus
Taxonomy
Pliohippus leidyanus was named by Osborn (1918). Its type specimen is AMNH 17724, a partial skeleton (Skull, jaws, vertebrre, fore and hind limbs, considerable portions of the ribs and other parts of the skeleton, all of one individual), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is ZXBar, which is in a Hemphillian terrestrial horizon in the Snake Creek Formation of Nebraska.
It was recombined as Pliohippus (Pliohippus) leidyanus by Stirton (1940); it was recombined as Dinohippus leidyanus by Quinn (1955), Skinner et al. (1977), MacFadden (1984), Azzaroli (1988), Kelly and Lander (1988), Kelly (1995), Prado and Alberdi (1996), MacFadden (1998), Kelly (1998) and Kelly (2000).
