Pliohippus tehonensis

Taxonomy
Protohippus tehonensis was named by Merriam (1915) [also said to be 1916]. Its type specimen is UCMP 21779, a tooth (left M1), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is South Tejon Hills, which is in a Clarendonian terrestrial horizon in the "Santa Margarita" Formation of California.

It was recombined as Pliohippus (Pliohippus) tehonensis by Stirton (1940); it was recombined as Dinohippus tehonensis by Hulbert (1993); it was synonymized subjectively with Pliohippus fairbanksi by MacFadden (1998); it was considered a nomen dubium by Kelly (1995); it was recombined as Pliohippus tehonensis by Drescher (1941) and Kelly (1998).
