Taxonomy
Pliolophus was named by Owen (1858). Its type is Pliolophus vulpiceps.

It was reranked as Hyracotherium (Pliolophus) by Wortman (1896); it was synonymized subjectively with Eohippus by Granger (1908); it was synonymized subjectively with Hyracotherium by Kitts (1956), Schiebout (1974) and Gingerich (1991).

It was assigned to Hyracotheriinae by Cope (1881); to Hyracotherium by Wortman (1896); to Equoidea by Prothero and Schoch (1989); and to Equidae by Froehlich (2002) and Hooker and Dashzeveg (2004).
