Mastodon matthewi was named by Osborn (1921). Its type locality is Aphelops Draw Quarries, which is in a Hemphillian terrestrial horizon in the Snake Creek Formation of Nebraska.
It was recombined as Miomastodon matthewi by Osborn (1922) and Osborn (1942); it was recombined as Pliomastodon matthewi by Osborn (1926) and Matthew (1930); it was recombined as Mammut matthewi by Shoshani and Tassy (1996).
