Taxonomy
Daphoenus vetus was named by Leidy (1853) [genotype; also said to be 1854]. Its type specimen is USNM 658-659 and is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Daphoenus.

It was recombined as Amphicyon vetus by Leidy (1854) and Leidy (1857).
