Probathyopsis praecursor

Taxonomy

Probathyopsis praecursor was named by Simpson (1929) [genotype]. Its type specimen is AMNH 16786, a partial skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Probathyopsis.

It was recombined as Prodinoceras praecursor by Schoch and Lucas (1985) and Lucas and Schoch (1998).

Synonyms

Probathyopsis successor was named by Jepsen (1930).

It was synonymized subjectively with Probathyopsis praecursor by Rose (1981) and Thewissen and Gingerich (1987); it was synonymized subjectively with Prodinoceras praecursor by Lucas and Schoch (1998).
Prouintatherium hobackensis was named by Dorr (1958). Its type specimen is UMMP 27249, a partial skull (nearly complete left lower jaw with P3-M3, six isolated upper cheekt teeth, and a mandibular condyle fragment), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is UM-Sub-Wy Locality 7, which is in a Clarkforkian terrestrial shale in the Wasatch Formation of Wyoming. It is the type species of Prouintatherium.

It was synonymized subjectively with Probathyopsis praecursor by Rose (1981) and Thewissen and Gingerich (1987); it was synonymized subjectively with Prodinoceras praecursor by Lucas and Schoch (1998).
