Dipodomys kansensis was named by Hibbard (1937) [also but incorrectly said to be 1939]. Its type locality is Edson, which is in a Hemphillian terrestrial horizon in Kansas.
It was recombined as Prodipodomys kansensis by Hibbard (1939), Jacobs (1977) and Dalquest et al. (1992).
