Liomys centralis was named by Hibbard (1941). Its type locality is Rexroad KU Locality 3, which is in a Blancan terrestrial horizon in the Rexroad Formation of Kansas.
It was recombined as Prodipodomys centralis by Hibbard (1972) and Kurten and Anderson (1980).
