Taxonomy
Proheteromys magnus was named by Wood (1932). Its type locality is Midway, which is in a Hemingfordian terrestrial horizon in the Torreya Formation of Florida.

It was recombined as Harrymys magnus by Bailey (1999) and Bailey (2004).
