Taxonomy
Canis wheelerianus was named by Cope (1877).

It was recombined as Aelurodon wheelerianus by Cope (1881), Scott and Osborn (1890), Matthew and Gidley (1904), Cope and Matthew (1915), Thorpe (1922), Matthew and Stirton (1930), Henshaw (1942) and Baskin (1980); it was recombined as Prohyaena wheelerianus by Schlosser (1890); it was considered a nomen dubium by VanderHoof and Gregory (1940) and McGrew (1944); it was synonymized subjectively with Aelurodon ferox by Tedford and Barghoorn (1993).
