Viverravidae was named by Wortman and Matthew (1899). Its type is Viverravus. It was considered monophyletic by Polly et al. (2006).
It was assigned to Creodonta by Hay (1902); to Viverravoidea by Flynn and Galiano (1982); to Feliformia by Bryant (1991); to Miacoidea by Flynn (1998) and Meehan and Wilson (2002); to Carnivora by Polly et al. (2006) and Rose et al. (2012); and to Carnivoramorpha by Wesley-Hunt and Werdelin (2005), Tomiya (2011) and Solé et al. (2016).
