Thecostegites was named by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: D Gedi C Tour]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Thecostegitidae.

It was assigned to Thecostegitidae by Murray (1985); and to Tabulata by Sepkoski (2002).
