Taxonomy
Trachypsammia was named by Gerth (1922) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Trachypsammia dendroides. It is the type genus of Trachypsammiidae.

It was assigned to Trachypsammiidae by Hill (1981) and Nowinski (1997); to Tabulata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Octocorallia by Sorauf (2004).
