Taxonomy
Hexacodus pelodes was named by Gazin (1952) [genotype]. Its type specimen is USNM 19215, a set of teeth (p4-m2), and it is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Hexacodus.

It was recombined as Protodichobune pelodes by Van Valen (1971).
