Eptingium was named by Dumitrica (1978) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis-u Tr Nori Sepkoski's reference number: 754,938]. Its type is Eptingium manfredi. It is the type genus of Eptingiidae.
It was assigned to Eptingiidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Nassellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
