Astrohippus ansae
Taxonomy
Protohippus ansae was named by Matthew and Stirton (1930). Its type specimen is UCMP 30225, a mandible (OOwer jaw with p2-m3 moderately worn.), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Coffee Ranch, which is in a Hemphillian terrestrial horizon in Texas. It is the type species of Pliohippus (Astrohippus).
It was recombined as Calippus ansae by Stirton (1935), Hesse (1936) and Savage (1941); it was recombined as Pliohippus ansae by Johnston (1937); it was recombined as Pliohippus (Astrohippus) ansae by Stirton (1940); it was recombined as Astrohippus ansae by Quinn (1955), Webb (1969), Bennett (1979), Dalquest (1983), MacFadden (1984) and MacFadden (1998).
