Astrohippus ansae

Taxonomy
Protohippus ansae was named by Matthew and Stirton (1930). Its type specimen is UCMP 30225, a mandible (OOwer jaw with p2-m3 moderately worn.), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Coffee Ranch, which is in a Hemphillian terrestrial horizon in Texas. It is the type species of Pliohippus (Astrohippus).

It was recombined as Calippus ansae by Stirton (1935), Hesse (1936) and Savage (1941); it was recombined as Pliohippus ansae by Johnston (1937); it was recombined as Pliohippus (Astrohippus) ansae by Stirton (1940); it was recombined as Astrohippus ansae by Quinn (1955), Webb (1969), Bennett (1979), Dalquest (1983), MacFadden (1984) and MacFadden (1998).

curved, transverse width relatively less, especially in premolars (in contrast to P. secu.ndu.s); mesostyle much heavier; cement lakes simple without enamel inflec- tions. In the lower teeth the metaconid and metastylid are oval to rounded in outline, the intervening valley narrowed or fading out toward base of tooth, the outer crescents rounded to flattened.
