Merychippus labrosus
Taxonomy
Protohippus labrosus was named by Cope (1874). Its type specimen is AMNH 8266, a mandible (a composite of two jaw fragments, the symphysis and the (right) ramus belonging certainly to different indi- viduals and probably to distinct species. The symph), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Pawnee Buttes (Upper Beds), which is in a Miocene terrestrial horizon in Colorado.
It was synonymized subjectively with Protohippus perditus by Matthew (1899); it was recombined as Merychippus labrosus by Hay (1902), Cope and Matthew (1915) and Osborn (1918); it was considered a nomen dubium by Gidley (1907), Galbreath (1953) and Macdonald (1992).
