Protolambda was named by Osborn (1898).

It was synonymized subjectively with Pediomys by Simpson (1929), Clemens (1966), Sahni (1972) and Montellano (1992).

It was assigned to Pediomyidae by Wilson et al. (2010); and to Pediomyidae by Williamson et al. (2012).
