Taxonomy
Protosciurus douglassi was named by Korth (1981). Its type locality is Prairie Dog Creek, which is in an Orellan terrestrial horizon in the Brule Formation of Nebraska.

It was recombined as Oligospermophilus douglassi by Korth (1987) and Korth et al. (2022).
