Mioclaenus opisthacus was named by Cope (1882).

It was recombined as Hemithlaeus opisthacus by Cope (1882); it was recombined as Protoselene opisthaca by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Protoselene opisthacus by Matthew (1897), Matthew (1937), Simpson (1937) and Schiebout (1974).
