Protosorex was named by Scott (1894). It is not extant. Its type is Protosorex crassus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Domnina by Patterson and McGrew (1937), Galbreath (1953), Hutchison (1966), Van Valen (1967), Repenning (1967) and Crochet (1974).

It was assigned to Soricidae by Hay (1902) and Hay (1930).
