Taxonomy
Sciurus vortmani was named by Cope (1879) [also spelt "wortmani"]. Its type specimen is AMNH 6960, a mandible (a left mandibular ramus bearing p4 and m3, the anterior tip and the vertical ramus posterior to the bases of the processes absent), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Prosciurus vortmani by Matthew (1910); it was recombined as Protospermophilus vortmani by Black (1963).
