Taxonomy
Prototomus insidiosus was named by Cope (1874). Its type locality is Arroyo Blanco (Cope), which is in a Wasatchian terrestrial horizon in the San Jose Formation of New Mexico.

It was recombined as Apheliscus insidiosus by Cope (1875), Matthew (1918), Simpson (1951), Rose (1981) and Gunnell (1998).
