Taxonomy
Eucrotaphus was named by Leidy (1850) [nomen nudum].

It was synonymized subjectively with Agriochoerus by Leidy (1873), Thorpe (1921), Thorpe (1921) and Wilson (1971); it was synonymized subjectively with Oreodon by Scott (1890); it was considered a nomen dubium by Thorpe (1924), Thorpe (1937), Scott (1940) and Stevens and Stevens (1996).

It was assigned to Oreodontidae by Cope (1884); to Oreodontoidea by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Merycoidodontidae by Leidy (1850) and Lander (1998).
