Actinocyathus was named by d'Orbigny (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u C Serp-l]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Lonsdaleia (Actinocyathus) by Sando (1983).

It was assigned to Axophyllidae by Hill (1981); to Lonsdaleia by Sando (1983); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
