Probassariscus was named by Merriam (1911).

It was synonymized subjectively with Bassariscus by Hall (1927), Hall (1930) and Gregory and Downs (1951).

It was assigned to Procyonidae by Merriam (1911), Baskin (1989) and Voorhies (1990); to Procyoninae by Baskin (1998); and to Procyonini by Baskin (2004).
