Rhinoceros matutinus was named by Marsh (1870).

It was synonymized subjectively with Diceratherium armatum by Prothero (1998); it was recombined as Diceratherium matutinum by Simpson (1930), Tedford and Hunter (1984) and Prothero (2005).
