Rhinoceros pacificus was named by Leidy (1872).
It was recombined as Diceratherium pacificum by Hay (1902) and Loomis (1908); it was considered a nomen dubium by Peterson (1920), Troxell (1921) and Stock (1933); it was synonymized subjectively with Diceratherium armatum by Fremd (1994).
