Sarcolemur was named by Cope (1875).

It was synonymized subjectively with Antiacodon by Gazin (1952), Gazin (1958), Gazin (1958), Eaton (1985) and Walsh (2000).

It was assigned to Pseudolemuridae by Schlosser (1877); to Limnotheriidae by Hay (1902); to Hyopsodontidae by Osborn (1902); and to Antiacodontinae by Stucky (1998).
