Taxonomy
Mioclaenus bathygnathus was named by Cope (1888).

It was recombined as Sarcothraustes bathygnathus by Scott (1892); it was synonymized subjectively with Triisodon heilprinianus by Matthew (1897); it was synonymized subjectively with Eoconodon heilprinianus by Matthew (1937); it was synonymized subjectively with Eoconodon coryphaeus by Schoch and Lucas (1981).
