Lutra piscinaria was named by Leidy (1873). It is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Lutra (Satherium) piscinaria by Gazin (1934); it was recombined as Satherium piscinarium by Barbour and Schultz (1937), Bjork (1973), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Willemsen (1992) and Prevosti and Ferrero (2008).
