Scalops latimanus was named by Bachman (1842). It is extant.

It was recombined as Scapanus latimanus by Hutchison (1968), Yates and Schmidly (1975), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Hutchison (1987) and Wilson and Reeder (1993).
