Taxonomy
Sorex aquaticus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Scalopus, Scalops.
It was recombined as Scalops aquaticus by Hay (1902); it was misspelled as Scalops aquaticus by Thomas (1911); it was recombined as Scalopus aquaticus by Geoffroy (1803), Hay (1930), Sherman (1952), Yates and Schmidly (1975), Kurten and Anderson (1980) and Hulbert and Pratt (1998).
