Taxonomy
Scalopus ruficervus was named by Dalquest (1969). Its type locality is Coffee Ranch, which is in a Hemphillian terrestrial horizon in Texas.

It was recombined as Hesperoscalops ruficervus by Tedford et al. (1987).
