Megatherium rusconii was named by Schaub (1935).
It was recombined as Schaubia rusconii by Hoffstetter (1949); it was recombined as Schaubitherium rusconii by Hoffstetter (1950); it was synonymized subjectively with Eremotherium laurillardi by Cartelle and De Iuliis (1995) and Hulbert and Pratt (1998); it was recombined as Eremotherium rusconii by Hoffstetter (1952), Paula Couto (1954), Gazin (1957), Kurten and Anderson (1980) and Pujos (2006).
