Grangerimus harkseni was named by Macdonald (1970). Its type locality is Rosebud (LACM 1830), which is in a Harrisonian terrestrial horizon in the Rosebud Formation of South Dakota.
It was recombined as Schizodontomys harkseni by Rensberger (1973), Gawne (1975), Korth (1997) and Storer (2002).
