Amplexus was named by Sowerby (1814) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-m C Step Sepkoski's reference number: 174,680,1240]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Amplexidae by Hill (1956), Chen et al. (1997) and Wang et al. (2018).
