Amplexus was named by Sowerby (1814) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-m C Step Sepkoski's reference number: 174,680,1240]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Amplexidae by Hill (1956); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
