Taxonomy
Sciurus lateralis was named by Say (1823). It is extant. It is the type species of Callospermophilus.
It was recombined as Citellus lateralis by Sealander (1964); it was recombined as Spermophilus lateralis by Kurten and Anderson (1980); it was recombined as Callospermophilus lateralis by Helgen et al. (2009).
