Taxonomy
Paramys relictus was named by Cope (1873). It is the type species of Altasciurus.

It was recombined as Sciurus relictus by Cope (1875) and Trouessart (1904); it was recombined as Prosciurus relictus by Matthew (1909), Matthew (1910), Wood (1937), Galbreath (1953), Wood (1962), Wood (1980) and Korth (1989); it was recombined as Altasciurus relictus by Korth and Tabrum (2017).
