Taxonomy
Phenacolemur jepseni was named by Simpson (1955). It is not extant. It is the type species of Simpsonlemur.

It was synonymized subjectively with Phenacolemur praecox by Delson (1971); it was recombined as Simpsonlemur jepseni by Robinson and Ivy (1994).
