Pantolestes chacensis was named by Cope (1875) [AMNH 48694 is the neotype]. Its type specimen is AMNH 48694, a set of teeth, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Trigonolestes chacensis by Matthew (1899) and Hay (1902); it was recombined as Diacodexis chacensis by Sinclair (1914); it was recombined as Simpsonodus chacensis by Krishtalka and Stucky (1986), Stucky (1998) and Theodor et al. (2007).
