Taxonomy
Stypolophus hians was named by Cope (1877).

It was recombined as Sinopa hians by Scott (1892), Matthew (1899), Matthew (1901), Matthew (1909) and Matthew and Granger (1915); it was recombined as Tritemnodon hians by Van Valen (1965); it was synonymized subjectively with Tritemnodon strenuus by Guthrie (1967), Gingerich and Deutsch (1989) and Gunnell (1998).
