Taxonomy
Sinopa major was named by Wortman (1902). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Church Buttes, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Bridger Formation of Wyoming.

It was recombined as Proviverra major by Van Valen (1965) and Gustafson (1986).
