Sinopa mordax was named by Matthew and Granger (1915).

It was recombined as Paeneprolimnocyon mordax by Van Valen (1969) and Delson (1971); it was recombined as Galecyon mordax by Gingerich and Deutsch (1989), Gunnell (1998) and Borths et al. (2016).
