Prototomus multicuspis was named by Cope (1875).
It was recombined as Stypolophus multicuspis by Cope (1877) and Hay (1902); it was recombined as Sinopa multicuspis by Scott (1892), Matthew (1899), Matthew (1901), Matthew (1909) and Matthew and Granger (1915); it was synonymized subjectively with Prototomus secundarius by Gingerich and Deutsch (1989) and Gunnell (1998).
