Sinopa vulpecula was named by Matthew and Granger (1915).
It was synonymized subjectively with Prototomus multicuspis by Guthrie (1971); it was recombined as Prototomus vulpecula by Gingerich and Deutsch (1989); it was recombined as Gazinocyon vulpeculus by Polly (1996) and Gunnell (1998).
