Taxonomy
Crocuta inexpectata was named by Cope (1895).

It was recombined as Uncia inexpectata by Cope (1899); it was recombined as Felis inexpectata by Simpson (1941), Slaughter (1966) and Kurtén (1976); it was synonymized subjectively with Acinonyx studeri by Kurten and Anderson (1980); it was considered a nomen dubium by Adams (1979); it was recombined as Miracinonyx inexpectatus by Van Valkenburgh et al. (1990) and Morgan and Seymour (1997).
