Taxonomy
Sorex carolinensis was named by Bachman (1837) [made type of supposed genus "Anotus" by Wagner 1855, but this name is preoccupied by Anotis Rafinesque 1815, a Russian spalacid]. It is extant.
It was synonymized subjectively with Blarina brevicauda by Hall (1981); it was recombined as Blarina carolinensis by Jones et al. (1984), George (1986), Wilson and Reeder (1993) and Hulbert and Pratt (1998).
