Arachnophyllum was named by Dana (1846) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov-u S Ludl-u Sepkoski's reference number: 711]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Arachnophyllinae by Hill (1956); to Arachnophyllidae by Merriam (1973) and Hill (1981); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).

Merriam 1973Astraeoid or thamnastraeoid rugose corals building horizonta1ly layered colonies in which individual corallites lack a discrete wall but on the distal surface are defined by elevated rim and axial pit. with or without crateriform margin. Septa thin, commonly with abun- dant angulation carinae; longer tnajor septa reaching the axis. Dissepiments very numerous, largely with near- horizontal bases in a wide dissepimentarium. with tabellae arched distally or rather flat. Longitudinal sections showing groups of vertical trabecular thickenings commonly defining septal traces.
